INSTALLATIONS

Work that needs space and/or a certain amount of time.

24_The Healers_all(H195xW160xD70)The Healers, 2024, H195 x W160 x D70 cm, stitched fabric, installation of four parts

Research has shown that a brain calms down by performing repetitive activities such as embroidery. This has proven to be true by having filled 4 large panels completely with hand stitches, connecting several layers.
Three panels are hung by straps that make them seem robes from monks or ancient healers. The third one is lying on the ground, symbolizing vulnerability. Red cheese cloth expresses hurt and woundedness.

24_Random Thoughts(var size)Random Thoughts, 2024, 45 elements L29-70 x W18-45 cm, painted, stitched and cut fiber elements, installation

Walking in a forest, thoughts come easily. They often seem to come out of nowhere and occasionally they disappear before you can grasp them. Also, thoughts can sometimes be difficult to make concrete. These aspects are depicted by cut-out holes and/or blue or silver reflective surfaces on the white elements. The black contours and lines give shape to the thoughts and are inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet.

The concept behind this installation is the existence of aerosols: tiny solid particles or droplets in air or another gas. Clouds, fog, mist, dust, geyser steam, volcano eruptions are made up of aerosols. Breath can contain these small particles too. Aerosols can be carriers of pollen, viruses, sooth and polluting fine particles. This is symbolised by the charcoal powder in the pyramids.

A month after realisation of this work the Covid pandemic was a fact.

18_Birth, 47x171Birth, 2018, H47 x W171 cm, 3 min. video, sound, photos, embroidery

Everything originates from something. It will finally disappear again, leaving some residue, some legacy, some heritage to shape a new beginning.
This looped video visualises a circular process of 3 hours in 3 minutes. Moments of the process are frozen into photos; the residue is added in a frame.

16_Women on a north bank of a river, 43 objects, H6-16Women on a North bank of a river, 2016, 43 objects H6-16 cm x W10 cm, stitched and stiffened fabric

Inspired by the duality of yin and yang: everything is connected, not one without the other. The title is a combination of yin – the female principle in nature: negative, passive, black – and yang – the North bank of a river (the sunny side): positive, active, white. The objects portray different human characteristics like shyness, braveness, strength, weakness, humbleness, and brazenness.
Half of the 43 objects have tops covered in white lacquer paint, the other half black lacquer paint. The red inside stands for unity, the differently coloured bottom edges symbolise diversity.
